Proposed Legislation Affects Jurisdiction in Camp Lejeune Litigation

On May 28, 2024, a new bill introduced in Congress aims to remove the restriction mandating that cases related to Camp Lejeune must be filed exclusively in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina. If passed, this legislation would allow cases to be heard in any district court within the Fourth Circuit for trial.

Initial impressions suggest that such a change could result in chaos rather than benefitting any party involved. The current structure, with cases centralized in the Eastern District of North Carolina, provides organization to the litigation process. While not all rulings may be favorable, this centralized approach has facilitated progress in advancing the litigation.
