Frequent and Severe Tepezza Adverse Effects

Tepezza can trigger a range of side effects, both common and severe, necessitating careful consideration before usage.

Tepezza Side Effects

The drug’s common side effects encompass a spectrum of issues like nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, muscle spasms, dry skin, taste alterations, and menstrual irregularities. Serious side effects include infusion reactions, exacerbated inflammatory bowel disease, and elevated blood sugar levels. Users should contemplate these potential effects before opting for Tepezza.

Common Tepezza Side Effects

Clinical trials on Tepezza outlined the safety profile and side effects. Muscle spasms emerged as the most frequent side effect, affecting 25% of patients, while 23% of menstruating women reported menstrual disorders.

The most prevalent adverse reactions (≥5%) included:

  • Muscle Spasms (25%)
  • Menstrual Disorders (23%)
  • Nausea (17%)
  • Alopecia (13%)
  • Diarrhea (12%)
  • Fatigue (12%)
  • Dry skin (8%)
  • Dysgeusia (a change in taste) (8%)
  • Headache (8%)
  • Weight loss (6%)
  • Nail disorder (5%)

The side effects were consistent across genders and age groups, with the possibility of adjustments as the body acclimates to the medication.

Serious Tepezza Side Effects

Tepezza might cause more severe reactions in a small subset of users, leading to issues such as severe diarrhea, hearing changes, infusion-related reactions (experienced by 4% of patients), inflammatory bowel disease exacerbation, and hyperglycemia in 10% of diabetic patients or those with impaired glucose tolerance.

Tepezza and Hearing Issues

Among the potential side effects, hearing impairment, including permanent hearing loss, stands out as a concern. Studies and reports have highlighted subjective and objective hearing function changes associated with Tepezza treatment, affecting up to 65% of patients.

Lawsuits across all 50 states have alleged that the drug’s manufacturer failed to adequately warn patients and their physicians about potential hearing loss or tinnitus risks. Subsequently, Horizon added a comprehensive warning regarding hearing impairment to Tepezza’s label in July 2023.

Tepezza and Tinnitus

Symptoms reported by patients undergoing Tepezza treatment include subjective hearing loss, tinnitus (a ringing sensation in the ears), sensations of ear plugging, muffled hearing, and autophony (perception of amplified or echoing voice). Experts recommend baseline testing for ear-related symptoms until further comprehensive studies on Tepezza are available.
