Roblox MDL 3166: what state investigations mean for family records

When a state attorney general opens a Roblox investigation, it can feel as if someone else is finally taking over the hard part. For parents, that is not quite how it works.

State investigations can matter. They can force documents into the open. They can push a platform to change its safety settings. They can also lead to settlements that pay money to a state or fund public safety programs. But they usually do not preserve the one thing an individual family may need most: the child's own record of what happened.

The newer state enforcement record

Connecticut added another public data point on May 26, 2026. Attorney General William Tong announced that his office had opened an investigation into Roblox after reports of child exploitation and harm. The release said Connecticut wants to know what Roblox knew, how the company profited, and what it did or did not do to protect children online. It also said Connecticut's investigation followed state settlements elsewhere, while Nebraska, Texas, Florida, Louisiana, and Kentucky had sued or had litigation still underway.

Oklahoma filed suit two weeks earlier. On May 14, 2026, Attorney General Gentner Drummond said Roblox had endangered children and deceived parents. His office said the complaint alleges that children as young as five could create accounts without a parent's knowledge and exchange messages with strangers. It also alleges that adults could pose as children, use multiple accounts, and dodge bans. Roblox denies wrongdoing and has said it has added safety measures.

None of that decides an individual family's case. It does show why records matter. Regulators are asking questions about account access, age checks, chat, parental notice, and what Roblox knew. Families may need proof on the same topics, but tied to one child and one timeline.

The MDL is still separate from the state cases

MDL 3166 is the federal case group for lawsuits alleging child sexual exploitation or assault connected to Roblox and related platform features. The Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation's pending MDL page links to the September 1, 2026 reports. Public case-count reporting we reviewed says the Roblox MDL has continued growing in the Northern District of California before Chief Judge Richard Seeborg.

That federal process is not a class action check program. A parent should not assume that a government settlement, a state lawsuit, or a later platform update automatically protects the family's civil claim. The individual facts still matter.

That can sound dry, but it is practical. A lawyer reviewing a possible Roblox claim will usually want to know basic things first: which account was used, how old the child was, who contacted the child, what settings were active, whether reports were made, and what harm followed.

Records to save before they disappear

If a child is in danger, call law enforcement or the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children first. Do not try to handle an emergency as a civil evidence project.

If the child is safe and the family is trying to preserve information, start with the basics:

Roblox usernames, display names, user IDs, linked email addresses, and rough dates of use.
Screenshots or exports of chats, friend lists, trusted contacts, private messages, blocks, reports, moderation notices, and account settings.
Device information, including the phone, tablet, computer, app version, browser, and any available login or location history.
Messages on other apps if contact moved to text, Discord, Snapchat, Instagram, or another service.
Reports to Roblox, school officials, law enforcement, NCMEC, doctors, counselors, or therapists.
Dates when parents changed age verification, content settings, parental controls, chat access, or trusted contacts.

There is one extra caution here. Do not forward, copy, upload, or casually share explicit material involving a minor. Preserve the device and talk to law enforcement or a lawyer about how that material should be handled.

Why later safety changes can complicate the record

A new age check or chat restriction may help kids going forward. It may also change what a parent sees the next time they open the account.

That is why the order matters. If it is safe, preserve first. Screenshot the settings. Save the report confirmations. Write down dates while they are fresh. Then make the account safer.

No. State enforcement can be relevant, but an individual claim depends on the child's facts, records, deadlines, and state law.

The state settlements reported so far have been government enforcement resolutions, not individual compensation programs for families.

Should parents delete the Roblox account?

Usually, deletion is a bad first step if evidence may be needed. If the child is safe, preserve account identifiers, settings, screenshots, messages, and reports before making changes.
